Flight- Beer Styles with History

33 Acres brewing equipment at teh calgary location Calgary brewery Tour

Recently the World Cup of Beer was held in Nashville, Tennessee as part of American Craft Beer week. At the awards, several Canadian breweries took home honors. Of them were two Alberta locations. The first, Town Square Brewing of Edmonton, and the second is 33 Acres Brewing Co. Founded in Vancouver, 33 Acres opened a Calgary location in the Spring off 2022. Although the location has a smaller than most in town brewing capacity, they use what they have to the fullest.

At the recent World Cup, 33 Acres Brewing Co took home a bronze for the Belgian- Style Tripel titled 33 Acres of Euphoria (on tap in Calgary but brewed in Vancouver), while the 33 Acres Brewing Experiment team from Vancouver earned a Gold for their Saaz Dry-hopped Saison in the Classic Saison category

Always ones to seek out what judges define as award winning beer, YYCTOURS stopped into 33 Acres Calgary this weekend to try the 33 Acres of Euphoria and to have a flight of some of their beer brewed in Calgary.

Our flight of four beers included the aforementioned 33 Acres of Euphoria, along with a California Common titled 33 Acres of Life, a Schwarzbier by the name of 33 Acres of Darkness and something they call 'Superberliner', which we believe is their take on a Berliner Weisse. We chose this flight as the styles offered play a part in the history of craft beer. The California Common was a style invented on the West Coast during the Gold Rush and is typically referred to as Steam Beer. It is Amber in colour and places emphasis on American Hops and ingredients. It is one of the first styles of beer invented and brewed in the US and it led the way for the West Coast beer scene. Schwarzbier, meaning "black beer' in German, with origins dating back to the 14th century, is a dark brown/ruby lager with light roasted notes and can be argued to be the oldest continuously brewed style of beer in the world.

Lastly, the Berliner Weisse, which often is referred to as the most refreshing beer in the world, and by Napoleon as the "Champagne of Beer". Although the beer is not as carbonated as Champagne, we can not disagree with the 'refreshing' part. This 33 Acres Superberliner was brewed with Tamarind and Peach, and those flavours came through in perfect harmony. Weisse means 'wheat' in German, although the Berliner Weisse often contains only low amounts of it along with malts. What makes a Berliner Weisse stand out is the use of Lactobacillus, giving the beer a sour quality. This beer jumped out of the flight as the best of the four and was so tasty and well crafted, that we continued to think about it long after we left and wanted to go back for more.

If you find yourself in the Beltline, be sure to stop in and try these beers. Of course, as always, let us know if you would like to stop here on a YYC Craft Beer Tour.
